Celebrating Unity on Labor Day

The following post is from Kim Glas, executive director of the BlueGreen Alliance.

Americans value hard work and want to provide a good life for our families, but that is getting harder and harder to do. It feels like it’s impossible to keep up with the cost of living and things like health care and other necessities are becoming out of reach for average folks.

History tells us it doesn’t have to be this way. For almost two hundred years in the United States, working people have banded together in the struggle for more than just better wages. They have fought for safety on the job, dignity in the workplace, fair and equitable treatment for all people, and a better overall quality of life that has spread throughout our economy to impact all Americans.

The fight is about more than just good jobs though. As we see from wildfires ravaging the West, stronger storms, and other impacts, climate change is real and it is here. We need a plan for the future that will both revitalize our economy for workers, and protect our environment by reducing the pollution that is driving climate change.

The first step to achieving that is recognizing that the attempts to divide us are built on a false premise — that we have to choose between good jobs and a clean environment. We do not.

The second is continuing to build the partnership between union members, environmentalists, environmental justice advocates, forward-thinking business leaders, and progressive champions to ensure that our voice — unified — is heard in from the city halls of America to the halls of Congress with one simple message: good jobs and a clean environment go hand-in-hand.

That’s why we will Rise for Climate, Jobs, & Justice on September 8. We urge you to search for a local event and join tens of thousands of people just like you that are ready to fight for a better future for all of us.

We need a plan for the future that will both revitalize our economy for workers, and protect our environment by reducing the pollution that is driving climate change.

Together, we must rally around a new plan to create good jobs right in our own communities, while protecting our environment for generations to come. That plan will train workers to prepare them for the jobs of today and tomorrow; rebuild, repair and modernize our nation’s infrastructure using American-made steel, aluminum, and other materials; and build the cutting edge technologies and equipment of the future — including clean, renewable energy, fuel-efficient vehicles and their components, and energy efficiency.

It’s time to rise up again and fight for a better life for future generations and ourselves. Join us on September 8. Sign up today.

We unite labor unions and environmental organizations to solve today’s environmental challenges in ways that create quality jobs.
